Mangrove conservation is not simply about planting seedlings along shorelines; it requires ensuring that coastal ecosystems thrive and sustainably support local livelihoods. This core message shaped the discussion at the talkshow titled “Mangroves and Growing Together: Collaborative Mangrove Conservation for Resilient Coasts,” hosted by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) during Festival Inspirasi 2026 at Taman Bendera Pusaka, South Jakarta, on Friday, August 7, 2026.<\/p>\n
Moderated by Galih Hakim Antarnusa, Senior Advisor of Mangrove Jakarta from Yayasan Mangrove Indonesia Lestari, the panel brought together three distinguished experts: Barnard Ceisaro Purba (Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Management Specialist at the Directorate of Coastal and Small Island Management, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries), Dr. Dolly Priatna (Executive Director of Belantara Foundation), and Toufik Alansar (Marine Program Manager at KEHATI).<\/p>\n
The speakers highlighted that successful mangrove restoration cannot be measured solely by the number of saplings planted during ceremonial events. Dr. Dolly Priatna emphasized the vital role of Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation (EMR), a methodology that prioritizes restoring natural hydrology, soil substrate conditions, and tidal dynamics before planting.<\/p>\n
By restoring favorable ecological conditions, mangrove seedlings can regenerate naturally and survive over the long term. Planting without site suitability assessments frequently results in high mortality rates due to unsuitable salinity or excessive wave exposure.<\/p>\n
Addressing the regulatory framework, Barnard Ceisaro Purba detailed national policy priorities for managing coastal zones and small islands. Sustainable ecosystem recovery depends heavily on integrated spatial zoning and strict enforcement to protect critical coastlines from destructive land conversion.<\/p>\n
Mangroves serve as natural coastal buffers against storm surges, vital breeding grounds for marine species, and formidable blue carbon sinks that mitigate global climate impacts. However, lasting conservation gains cannot happen without actively engaging local coastal residents as primary stewards.<\/p>\n
Toufik Alansar stressed that conservation initiatives must provide tangible socioeconomic benefits to surrounding communities. When local fishers and residents benefit from non-timber forest products, community-based ecotourism, or sustainable silvofishery, they develop a direct economic stake in safeguarding the mangrove forest.<\/p>\n
Around 35 participants comprising youth environmental advocates, researchers, and community representatives engaged actively during the interactive question and answer session. Discussions explored geospatial mapping, satellite monitoring tools, and community-driven mobile apps that empower youth to track mangrove health in real time.<\/p>\n
The talkshow concluded with the presentation of appreciation certificates by YIIM Chairman Normansyah Kusuma to all speakers and the moderator, followed by a joint group photo.<\/p>\n
