The Inspirational Indonesia Building Foundation (YIIM) together with PT. Pertamina Training and Consulting (PTC) established a community empowerment program, namely entrepreneurship training to improve the economic welfare of the community. This training aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 1 on ending poverty and number 10 on reducing inequality.<\/p>\n

Susiliawati Muryani Berlian (43 years old), also known as Bu Susi, is an alumna of the batch 2 entrepreneurship training program for ready-to-eat frozen food held by YIIM and PTC in 2021. Bu Susi is a client of the Class 1 Correctional Center (BAPAS) for Central Jakarta. Currently, Bu Susi lives in the Gunung Sari area of Central Jakarta with her husband, four children, her mother, and her older sibling.<\/p>\n

Life in the Detention Center<\/p>\n

During her time in the detention center (rutan), Bu Susi supported herself by doing various tasks. To meet her needs in the rutan, Bu Susi took on extra work because she needed funds, as all prices within the rutan were relatively expensive. Bu Susi had to work inside the rutan, one of which was washing clothes for fellow inmates. The payment she received from friends for washing clothes varied depending on the amount of laundry and detergent used. Bu Susi did not want to burden her family outside by asking them for an allowance during her time in the rutan.<\/p>\n

“I’ve already caused trouble by being in here, I’m not going to ask for money from outside too.”<\/em><\/p>\n

After 22 months in the detention center, Bu Susi was finally released in 2021. Through this experience, Bu Susi gained many life lessons. She did not want to return to her dark past and wanted to change her life for the better.<\/p>\n

“After I got out, I felt that I had to value money and also time. Only after getting out did I really feel how hard it is to earn even Rp100,000.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Starting with Training, Then Building a Business<\/p>\n

After leaving the detention center, Bu Susi felt confused about what to do next. Fortunately, Bu Susi received information from the Community Counselor (PK) at BAPAS that a frozen food entrepreneurship training would be held by YIIM and PTC. Bu Susi was very interested in joining this training because she wanted to learn new things. After registering, Bu Susi was finally selected to participate in the frozen food training. Bu Susi felt the benefits of the training immensely. This training helped her improve her skills and gain new knowledge.<\/p>\n

After the training, Bu Susi started her own business selling milk jelly ice. Bu Susi sells it under the name “Es Susu Jelly Nenek Gunung”. Every day, Bu Susi markets her product to friends by word of mouth and through WhatsApp. Her sales system is based on pre-orders only. The milk jelly ice is priced at Rp8,000 per bottle. Bu Susi has been running this milk jelly ice business for 4-5 months, assisted by her older sibling and her child. So far, most of the orders Bu Susi receives come from the Depok area.<\/p>\n

Bu Susi is very grateful for the business she runs today. This business has become one of the main sources of income for her and her husband, enough for their daily meals. She does not want to rely on her children to meet the family’s daily needs.<\/p>\n

In addition to milk jelly ice, Bu Susi also sells various nuts and cakes like Nastar. She sells Thai onion peanuts priced from Rp40,000 to Rp75,000 in various packaging sizes. She also sells assorted small snacks under the name “Snack Kaki Gunung” and milk fla gabin cookies. These snacks are priced from Rp2,000 to Rp3,000. Bu Susi consigns her snacks to 6-7 food stalls, restocking every two days, and for BAPAS, she consigns every five days.<\/p>\n

During her selling journey, Bu Susi has faced several challenges, such as customers delaying payments for orders. Additionally, she is not yet able to sell online because she is still unfamiliar with the online sales system. For her milk jelly ice business, Bu Susi needs a freezer. However, the limited electrical capacity at her home makes it impossible to use a freezer. This hasn’t stopped Bu Susi from pursuing her business. She always strives to grow her business by offering her products to those around her.<\/p>\n

Expanding Business at the BAPAS Canteen<\/p>\n

To expand her business, in May 2022, Bu Susi had the opportunity to sell at a simple canteen at the Central Jakarta BAPAS, known as the “Klien Kemandirian Canteen”. Bu Susi was assisted by a cooperative administrator, Pak Sadi, to sell at the Central Jakarta BAPAS. During her time at BAPAS, Bu Susi sold various foods including nasi uduk, nasi kuning, nasi bakar, fried snacks, donuts, dimsum, stuffed bao buns with various flavors, and lupis. In addition, she also sold various bottled drinks such as coca-cola, fanta, and various syrups. The food and drinks sold by Bu Susi were priced at Rp5,000.<\/p>\n

While selling at BAPAS, Bu Susi’s customers consisted of officers, children, and teachers from nearby schools. Bu Susi also frequently received orders for snack boxes for BAPAS employees and other events. Bu Susi’s net daily income was around Rp150,000.<\/p>\n

By running this business, Bu Susi hopes to expand it further in the future. She wants to develop more skills to add variety to her food business.<\/p>\n
