The Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun Foundation (YIIM), supported by PT Insight Investments Management (INSIGHT) through one of its flagship programs, the Social Entrepreneurship Training for underprivileged and pre-prosperous communities, has once again produced independent micro-entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
The Social Entrepreneurship Training aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Number 1, ending poverty in all its forms everywhere, and SDGs Number 10, reducing inequality.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, YIIM and INSIGHT present the profile of a beneficiary, one of the alumni of the barber entrepreneurship class (Barber Class), namely Nur Bintang (25), or commonly known as Bintang.<\/p>\n
Bintang is one of the alumni of the barber entrepreneurship training conducted by YIIM and INSIGHT, batch 1 in 2020. Bintang used to sell siomay (dumplings) but had to close down his business due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. After the passing of his father, Bintang had to become the breadwinner for his family to meet the daily needs of his mother and his two siblings who are still in school. His mother, a farmer, found that her farming income was not enough to support the family’s needs.<\/p>\n
Before joining the barber training, this young man from Purbalingga, Central Java, was unemployed and had moved to Jakarta to look for work. Despite the very limited conditions in Jakarta, he did not give up hope of changing his situation. Armed with information from a friend about the barber class training organized by YIIM and INSIGHT, Bintang joined the program, passed the internship stage, and received mentoring at the Inspirasi Barbershop with great enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
During his internship, Bintang saved the money he earned from cutting hair at Barbershop Inspirasi to rent a place in his hometown to start a haircut service business. He then submitted a business proposal and received a grant of barbershop equipment from YIIM and INSIGHT to open his own barbershop in his hometown, named “Bintang Barbershop”, located in Karangpucung, Kartanegara, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java.<\/p>\n
Every day, Bintang helps his mother farm before opening his barbershop. He runs his barbershop from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. On a typical day, Bintang can cut the hair of 5 customers, and on holidays, he can serve 15-20 people. In a month, he can earn around IDR 1,500,000 (one million five hundred thousand rupiah) up to IDR 2,000,000 (two million rupiah) in revenue.<\/p>\n
Over time, Bintang began to expand his business by honing his entrepreneurial management skills at Millenial Barbershop in Karawang. He did this not only to learn how to manage a barbershop business but also to expand his network with fellow barbershop entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
Amidst the current Covid-19 pandemic, managing a barbershop business is certainly not easy for Bintang. However, he refuses to give up and continues to learn and sharpen his hair cutting skills. Bintang also prioritizes health protocols, such as wearing masks, gloves, and using disinfectant spray to clean his barber tools regularly.<\/p>\n
Now, Bintang is grateful to have improved his family’s economic situation and to have a primary income from his barbershop business. He is committed to advancing his barbershop business to help others, and sharing knowledge and benefits are values and principles he holds firmly along with other alumni. These are the values and principles instilled by YIIM throughout the empowerment process and mentoring of the businesses pioneered by the alumni. He also hopes to inspire and provide benefits to young people in his village.<\/p>\n
May more and more MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) be created through YIIM’s economic empowerment programs with INSIGHT. Through these programs, YIIM is open to anyone who wants to support social programs, including community empowerment programs.<\/p>\n
