Clean-water pipeline assistance in Wonogiri and Ponorogo

In May 2023, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), supported by PT Insight Investments Management, collaborated with Yayasan Gemah Mustika Insani to extend artesian-well projects established in 2021 through new clean-water pipelines in Wonogiri, Central Java, and Ponorogo, East Java.

In Wates Hamlet, Jatinom Village, Sidoharjo District, Wonogiri Regency, construction ran from 13 to 28 May 2023. An 800-meter pipeline served 15 households comprising 48 people, ten agricultural plots, and one pilgrimage cemetery.

Before the project, the highland community relied heavily on rain-fed agriculture. During dry seasons, land often became unproductive, and residents travelled approximately two kilometers to a natural source beside a river. Flooding could make the water muddy and sweep away pipes. The new system reduced the distance residents travelled for clean water to approximately 200 to 400 meters.

In Sodong Hamlet, Gelangkulon Village, Sampung District, Ponorogo Regency, a 370-meter pipeline was constructed from 13 May through June 2023. It served ten households comprising 40 people, ten agricultural plots, and Masjid Shirothol Mustaqin.

The rocky, hilly terrain had made clean water difficult to obtain. During dry seasons, residents previously travelled about 700 meters to a source. The pipeline reduced this distance to approximately 150 meters.

Isnaeni Setiawan, CSR Coordinator at Insight, explained that the company’s Transforming Investments to Social Impact approach allows investors to support communities and the environment. He hoped the pipelines would improve dry-season water access and help farmers become more productive.

YIIM and Yayasan Gemah Mustika Insani coordinated with local stakeholders and residents to oversee maintenance of pumps, electricity, wells, and pipelines. Water is supplied without charge for household use, farming, ablution facilities, and the cemetery.
