Youth Climate Action: Mangrove Planting Restores Coastal Ecosystem in Demak
YIIM, Insight, and youth volunteers planted 2,000 mangrove propagules along the vulnerable coastline of Demak to combat coastal erosion and safeguard local fishing communities.

Coastal abrasion and rising sea levels pose severe threats to coastal communities in northern Java. To counteract these ecological challenges, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) together with PT Insight Investments Management and local coastal conservationists organized a massive Mangrove Planting Day in Demak, Central Java.
A total of 2,000 mangrove saplings (Rhizophora mucronata) were planted along degraded shorelines by enthusiastic youth volunteers, student activists, and local fishing families.
The mangrove belt acts as a natural green barrier against tidal surges, mitigates coastal abrasion, sequesters carbon, and restores essential breeding grounds for marine life, protecting local fisheries.
This initiative reinforces YIIM’s environmental commitment, advancing SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land.
Inspiration Greetings!
