Hairstyling Training Builds Enterprise Skills Among Women at Pondok Bambu
Ten women completed five days of intensive hairstyling training covering equipment, cutting, blow-drying, creambath treatment, and supervised practice.

From 3 to 7 July 2023, YIIM and PT Insight Investments Management held five days of hairstyling entrepreneurship training at Pondok Bambu Class I State Detention Centre in East Jakarta.
The course formed part of a broader program to support productive empowerment for detention-centre residents. Ten women participated from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
Chrisbiantoro, Chair of the YIIM Executive Board, explained that the program was intended to combine technical hairstyling skills with entrepreneurship knowledge, micro and small-business bookkeeping, business planning, and digital marketing. Participants could share their new knowledge with other residents, practice through business units inside the detention centre, and later establish independent hairstyling enterprises after completing their sentences.
Khutbi, a professional hairstylist and owner of DeLavina Salon, served as lead trainer with Agus Jamaludin as assistant trainer. Participants received learning modules and individual hairstyling toolkits for direct practice.
The curriculum introduced hairstyling tools and equipment, hair sectioning, cutting principles, blow-drying, and creambath treatment. Practical assignments included correct scissor use, elevation techniques, full-oval styles, parallel graduation using a positive diagonal cutting line, haircut finishing, layering, creambath, and blow-drying.
Participants initially practiced on mannequins. On the final day, they invited fellow residents to act as clients and completed haircuts based on each person’s requested style.
The program supports government efforts to create productive detention centres that equip residents with useful skills. YIIM and Insight hoped the training would strengthen economic and social reintegration and encourage broader involvement in correctional empowerment.
