U-DETECT Jakarta Engages 30 Students in Citizen Science and Climate Learning

Thirty SMAN 48 Jakarta students worked in 15 groups to monitor their environment with simple sensors while strengthening STEM, citizen-science, and climate literacy.

Jakarta’s metropolitan area faces interconnected environmental challenges, including urban heat, air pollution, and the effects of climate change. In response, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), PT Insight Investments Management, and PT Inovasi Finansial Teknologi, known as Makmur, worked with implementing partner U-Inspire Indonesia to deliver Jakarta Weather Detective, or U-DETECT Jakarta.

The education program was held at SMAN 48 Jakarta on 17 June 2026. Partner representatives included Ria Meristika Warganda, Director of Insight; Stefanus Dennis Winarto, Chief Investment Officer of Makmur; Giovanni Chyntia Pradipta, Lead of U-Inspire Indonesia; and Diantini Rahayu from YIIM.

Thirty students formed 15 groups to monitor environmental conditions using sensor technology. The approach strengthened STEM literacy and introduced citizen science by moving students beyond textbook learning and involving them directly in a simple research process.

Through real-time temperature monitoring, students learned how data can reveal urban environmental conditions and support evidence-based discussion of climate change and pollution. This experiential method encouraged early awareness and showed young people that they can participate in practical climate action.

Stefanus Dennis Winarto compared the program’s impact to investment compounding: small contributions made consistently can grow into significant results over time. He said U-DETECT demonstrated how investor participation could create tangible benefits for society.

Representing U-Inspire Indonesia, Giovanni Chyntia Pradipta presented certificates of appreciation to YIIM, Insight, Makmur, and SMAN 48 East Jakarta. U-Inspire also handed over a U-DETECT sensor to the school so environmental learning and monitoring could continue.

The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s Asta Cita priority on human resources, science, technology, education, youth, women, and inclusion. It contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 13: Climate Action and reflects environmental, social, and governance principles through direct monitoring of environmental parameters.
