Following the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that struck Cianjur in December 2022, public infrastructure and educational facilities across the affected area suffered serious damage. One of the facilities selected for relocation and reconstruction was Tunas Karya Kindergarten.

The school served communities in Sukamulya Village, including Gedeh, Pasirsapi, and Barukaso hamlets. The area was home to an estimated 147 households comprising 420 residents. Tunas Karya had two teachers and 39 pupils, with 26 children in the senior kindergarten class and 13 in the junior class.

In July 2023, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and PT Insight Investments Management began the initial relocation and construction stage at the PTPN VIII Kebon Gedeh unit in Cianjur, West Java. The partners worked with local contractor PT Bougenville Cipta Abadi.

The program provided Rp444,183,000, including tax, based on the conditions at the post-earthquake site and the building design and budget plan agreed by the partners.

The funding covered preliminary work, soil excavation, foundations and concrete, wall construction, floors and ceramic tiles, doors and windows, roofing and ceilings, wall painting, electrical systems, and water and sanitation facilities. YIIM, its partner, and the appointed contractor supervised implementation through the organization’s established procedures.

The relocated building was designed to restore a safe place for the 39 children and their teachers to learn. It also created a community asset for families living around the PTPN VIII Kebon Gedeh area as they continued recovering from the disaster.

The program contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education by rebuilding access to appropriate early-childhood education infrastructure in a community affected by the Cianjur earthquake.
