From 2 to 4 October 2024, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and Insight Investments Management held three days of air-conditioning cleaning and servicing training to help vulnerable community members pursue employment and independent service businesses.

Ten participants came from varied backgrounds, including people affected by layoffs, online motorcycle-taxi drivers, and unemployed community members. The trainer, Isnaini Hasan, was a graduate of YIIM’s 2020 AC-cleaning course who had developed a service business called Ar-Rayyaan Teknik and worked as a senior employee at a vehicle-cooling company.

On the first day, participants completed a pre-test before learning how air-conditioning systems produce cool air. They studied AC components, formulas for selecting capacity according to room size, electrical-current measurement, initial fault diagnosis, and professional ethics for service technicians.

The second day introduced refrigerants and tools such as clamp meters. Participants practiced installing AC pipes, charging R410A refrigerant, dismantling and reassembling covers and internal components, identifying components associated with common problems, and cutting and flaring copper pipes.

The trainers emphasized that correct pipe cutting and flaring were essential because poor connections could prevent a unit from cooling effectively. Repeated practice helped participants connect technical theory with installation and repair work.

On the third day, the trainer demonstrated the correct use of AC-washing equipment and a standard cleaning procedure. Participants then completed supervised cleaning practice using the demonstrated operating standards.

The initiative contributes to SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. YIIM hoped participants would use the technical knowledge to enter the workforce, serve their communities, or establish independent AC-cleaning and servicing businesses.
