Modern Snack Training Expands Inclusive Enterprise Opportunities
Fourteen low-income participants, including people with speech disabilities, learned practical snack production, costing, and business skills in an inclusive cooking workshop.
On Thursday, 31 October 2024, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), supported by PT Insight Investments Management, held social-enterprise culinary training in contemporary dry snacks for people from low-income backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
Culinary skills offer promising economic potential for communities in both urban and rural areas. The program was designed to teach products that were relatively easy to prepare while remaining competitive in the market. It combined theory, ingredient processing, direct hands-on practice, cost-of-goods calculation, discussion, and questions.
The training took place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the YIIM office in Grand Wijaya Centre Block F/62B, Pulo, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Fourteen participants attended, including low-income community members and participants with speech disabilities.
Ambar Yuliasiwi served as the lead trainer, assisted by Susilawati Muryani Berlian. Riccana Rosita, Treasurer and representative of the YIIM board, opened the program. She explained that YIIM had been operating for ten years and that social-enterprise skills courses, including culinary training, were among its flagship programs. She encouraged participants to use the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience that could be applied through independent businesses.
Participants were divided into five groups for direct practice. In the first session, they learned to make aci kejepit and miniature rolled spring rolls. The second session covered cassava sticks and sesame Marie-biscuit snacks. For every menu item, the trainers introduced the ingredients and demonstrated each stage of production before participants completed the process themselves.
The class was highly interactive. Participants asked the training team questions and were given opportunities to practice all four menu items. The inclusive group format allowed participants to learn together while building confidence in both production and business possibilities.
Debbi Maelani, one of the participants, thanked YIIM and Insight IM for providing the course. She hoped the new knowledge would inspire participants and help them become more independent.
The program contributes to SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. It reflects YIIM and Insight IM’s commitment to using social funding to generate positive socioeconomic impact.
