First Perfume Enterprise Training Encourages Independent Businesses
Seventeen participants learned fragrance basics, scent blending, production, and business planning during YIIM’s first two-day perfume entrepreneurship course.
Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and PT Insight Investments Management held their first perfume entrepreneurship training on 20 and 21 August 2024. The two-day program was designed to equip vulnerable participants with practical production skills and a realistic pathway to independent income.
Seventeen people took part, including correctional clients, workers affected by layoffs, homemakers, unemployed people, and casual labourers. Riccana Rosita, Treasurer of YIIM, opened the training. She explained that participants had been selected for their potential and encouraged them to follow every session seriously so they could use the knowledge to build greater economic independence.
The trainer was Susgiharti, an entrepreneur who had worked in the perfume industry since 2000 and owned Aneka Parfum, a business with seven branches across Jakarta, Bekasi, and Tangerang. Her long experience allowed participants to learn both the technical and commercial sides of the business.
On the first day, participants completed a pre-test and learned perfume fundamentals, product types, aroma characteristics, and how to identify fragrance oils. They trained their sensitivity to different scents and practiced combining ingredients. On the second day, they developed blends from several fragrance oils to create distinctive aromas and discussed how to start and manage a perfume business based on Susgiharti’s experience.
Certificates were presented at the end of the course. During the closing session, Chrisbiantoro, Chair of YIIM, encouraged participants to begin with an accessible business model, such as becoming a perfume blender or reseller. He also suggested gaining additional experience through an internship with the trainer before opening an independent enterprise.
The program reflected the commitment of YIIM and Insight to help vulnerable communities participate more fully in economic activity. By combining technical practice, entrepreneurship knowledge, and guidance from an established business owner, the training supported SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
