To celebrate World Ocean Day, observed on 8 June, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), supported by PT Insight Investments Management, held an environmental conservation and community-empowerment program on Kelapa Island in the Thousand Islands on 25 June 2022.

Participants included Andrean Malta, Head of Retail Sales Distribution and Business Alliances at Insight; Chrisbiantoro, Chair of YIIM; Muhammad Nuralim, Secretary of Kelapa Island Urban Village; Safaatul Anam, Chair of Pokdarwis Kelapa Tunggal; environmental influencer Petra Gabriel Michael, known as Jebraw; local residents; and Insight investors.

The program combined three activities: frozen-food training for fishing families, mangrove planting along the coast, and coral-reef rehabilitation.

Andrean Malta explained that the initiative reflected Insight’s concern for Kelapa Island’s environment and its commitment to direct part of investment returns toward social benefits. Chrisbiantoro said mangrove and coral restoration would improve the island’s surroundings while the culinary course would strengthen women’s skills. Muhammad Nuralim emphasized that coastal restoration could protect the surrounding sea and that food training could help local women develop their businesses.

The cooking course was held beside RPTRA Nyiur Melambai. Wanmayetty, a 2019 YIIM culinary-training alumna, taught participants to make frozen fish-and-vegetable nuggets using fish purchased directly from Kelapa Island fishers. Seventeen women from Kelapa and Harapan islands participated and received certificates and goodie bags.

At the same time, 20 Insight investors and ten local residents, guided by Pokdarwis Kelapa Tunggal, planted 2,000 mangrove seedlings. Ten local residents also installed ten coral-rehabilitation modules at depths of 1.5 to three meters.

The integrated program supported coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods. It contributes to SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 14: Life Below Water.
