In preserving the underwater ecosystem, the Indonesian Development Inspiration Foundation (YIIM) celebrated World Clean Up Day and encouraged beach cleaning and coral reef planting on Tunda Island, Wednesday (02/10/2019).

Endang Retnowati, S.I.Kom, YIIM’s public relations and institutional department stated that around 70 percent of the earth’s surface is ocean. The sea provides many benefits for life such as oxygen reserves (blue carbon), food sources and recreational tourism. Currently, seas throughout the world are polluted by rubbish, especially plastic.

“This is a problem that is the focus of many people in the world and if left unchecked it can damage the ecosystem and marine life, including on Tunda Island. Tunda Island is one of the tourist islands in Banten Province and is included in a marine conservation area,” he said.

As explained by Endang Retnowati, the Indonesian Inspiration for Building Foundation (YIIM) supported by Insight Investments Management in collaboration with the Banten Provincial Government and the Indonesian Coral Reef Foundation (Terangi) on September 21 carried out a World Clean Up Day event on Tunda Island entitled “Preserve My Sea, Lestari My Earth”.

“The event was attended by various relevant government and private agencies. The event began by welcoming invited guests at the Tunda Island pier accompanied by a marching band performance from the children of the Tunda Island Integrated School. On this occasion, YIIM called for reducing the use of plastic by distributing stainless steel straws and ecobags as merchandise,” he explained.

He continued to explain the series of events held at this event, including entertainment events, namely traditional dance performances by several Tunda Island Integrated Middle School students and qasidah from Tunda Island PKK mothers, craft competitions made from recycled waste, exhibition booths for local products such as bonsai, shell crafts, breadfruit chips and Instant Kriuk Fish Crackers (KIKI), YIIM’s booth, namely Kopi Inspirasi which served free coffee drinks for invited guests and the local community, and free haircut activities for the local community by barberman as a result of hair barber training by YIIM, as well as literacy activities for the children of Tunda Island in the form of children’s fairy tales by the CT Arsa Foundation team and the peak event was a beach clean and lowering of coral reef modules by the Terangi Foundation by applying a new method, namely Clarys (Clay Artificial Reef System) which uses clay as the main material for making coral seed planting media.

“Apart from that, there is also a sharing session between the community and the government, where in this forum YIIM tries to be a forum for mediating complaints from the community and proposing alternative solutions to problems by the government through representatives of related agencies. The problems discussed in the sharing session include education, health and socio-economics so that the aspirations of both parties can be directly conveyed,” concluded Endang Retnowati, by holding this event it is hoped that it can build mutual concern for the environment, especially the sea and coastal areas and the potential of Tunda Island as a tourism island can be better known and sought after by the public. wide.
