Bandung, 4 October 2025 – In an effort to prevent thalassemia, the Indonesian Inspiration for Building Foundation (YIIM) and Insight Investments Management are collaborating with the Indonesian Thalassemia Foundation and the Bandung Social Welfare Polytechnic. This collaboration embodies the Thalassemia Seminar and Screening activities which will be held on October 4 2025 in Bandung City.
Thalassemia is a blood disorder that is inherited through parents or families who are carriers. Considering that thalassemia cannot yet be cured, prevention is the most effective solution in treating it. Unfortunately, Indonesian people’s knowledge regarding this disease is still very general. The Ministry of Health notes that in 2023 there will be 11,000 people with thalassemia. At the provincial level, the highest number of people with thalassemia is West Java, with 4,255 people. Apart from that, at the city or district level which has the highest number of people with thalassemia is the Bandung City area.
With the theme “Making the Future of Zero Thalassemia a Reality”, this program specifically targets the young generation of Bandung City to increase their knowledge and awareness. Efforts to prevent the growth of thalassemia numbers in this program include digital campaigns, seminars and screening.
This Thalassemia Seminar and Screening activity attracted the participation of 160 young generation participants, with a total of 142 participants undergoing screening. Before taking part in the activity, the majority of participants had absolutely no knowledge about thalassemia. However, after the seminar the participants understood all the important information about thalassemia, from medical knowledge to preventative steps they could take. This is in accordance with the feedback from several participants who took part in this activity, such as “By taking part in this activity, I became aware of what thalassemia is and how to treat and prevent it” and “I came to understand about thalassemia, plus the screening made us Gen Z children who have started to enter marriageable age become more aware”
Through this initiative, YIIM hopes to provide inspiration for the younger generation to actively spread the issue of thalassemia, so as to prevent the emergence of thalassemia cases in future generations.
