Teaching and learning activities from home during the Covid-19 pandemic presented its own obstacles for students and teachers. Apart from the limited capacity to carry out teaching and learning activities, financing internet quota seems to be a problem in itself.

Many teachers from small private schools in Jakarta complain about expensive internet costs during distance teaching and learning activities. They have to pay quota fees from their own pockets because the school never planned for such a budget.

Therefore, the Indonesian Building Inspiration Foundation (YIIM) plans to distribute quota fees to teachers who carry out teaching and learning activities from home in the DKI area and its surroundings.

“We have carried out a survey and plan to distribute it to all private schools. In principle, private schools are small,” said YIIM foundation chairman Chrisbiantoro when contacted, Tuesday (5/5/2020).

A total of 16 teachers were each given an internet quota for teaching of IDR 200,000 a month. The gift will be given for two months.

Chrisbiantoro assessed that this assistance was really needed considering that teaching activities and meetings between teachers were also carried out remotely via an internet connection. “Teachers teach 24 hours, maximum 32 hours, only 4 weeks a month, how much is that. Almost every day they need internet, while finances are running low in the midst of the pandemic (Covid-19),” he explained.

Several other schools in the Central Jakarta and Depok areas have also been surveyed to provide assistance. However, Chrisbiantoro admitted that not all schools were willing to reveal the deficiency data because they were afraid of it being revealed to the public. “So it is a bit difficult for some schools. We only focus on private schools because state schools usually have funding from the government,” he said. Not only teachers, YIIM will also provide internet quota to students who carry out learning activities via an internet connection. However, this quota is given through strict selection so that the assistance is right on target. “Most of these students use cellphones for their parents. On the one hand, some of their parents use them for other purposes such as watching Korean dramas, some use them for online trading and so on. I first surveyed several correspondents,” he said. He ensured that students who would receive assistance would come from families who were really hampered by internet quota costs for studying at home. Apart from that, students will also be given complete stationery and books for learning activities at home. “We just want there to be no obstacles for students to gain knowledge even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he explained.
