PROMS Restores Coastal Habitat and Supports Turtle Conservation in Ujung Genteng

Coastal habitat restoration and turtle conservation in Ujung Genteng

On 19 August 2023, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and PT Insight Investments Management supported the 18th Project on The Moves, organized by the Management Student Association of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia. Insight provided Rp27,000,000 in sponsorship for the program’s second pre-event, themed Harnessing Growth Opportunities for Sustainable Living.

The environmental initiative focused on protecting the turtle population and restoring coastal habitat at Ujung Genteng Beach, Sukabumi Regency, West Java. Indonesia is home to green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley turtles, but their survival is threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting, and accidental capture in fishing activities. The southern Sukabumi coast is an important habitat for green turtles.

Although government measures include protected areas, marine parks, and prohibitions on turtle exploitation, conservation requires sustained cooperation among communities, students, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and public institutions.

During the activity, participants planted 1,878 mangrove and coastal pandan seedlings. These plants help reduce erosion and flooding while supporting coastal ecosystems where turtles nest. Protecting the shoreline also helps improve the survival prospects of turtle eggs.

The team renovated a turtle hatchery and released hatchlings into the sea. Hatcheries protect nests from disturbance, increase the likelihood that eggs will hatch successfully, and provide facilities for conservation research and public education.

The program gave participating students and Ujung Genteng residents direct experience in habitat restoration and turtle conservation. It also strengthened knowledge of the connection between healthy coastal vegetation, protected nesting areas, and the long-term survival of marine species.

Through the Project on The Moves collaboration, YIIM and Insight helped young people turn environmental awareness into practical action. The initiative contributes to SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
