For farming families in Taji Village, a bridge is more than a way across a river. It is the connection between their homes, their coffee fields, and the income that supports everyday life.

With support from PT Insight Investments Management, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun, or YIIM, helped construct the Inspiration Bridge in Taji Village, Jabung District, Malang Regency, East Java. The bridge links Taji with farmland near Pandangsari Lor Village and has become an essential route for farmers transporting crops and reaching their plantations.

Taji lies on the slopes of Mount Bromo, where farming is the main livelihood for much of the community. Many residents live in the village while cultivating land about one kilometer away in Pandangsari Lor. Reaching those fields once required travelling over steep, rocky, and muddy terrain before crossing a river approximately five meters wide.

For decades, farmers depended on a semi-permanent bamboo bridge. Its limited strength restricted the loads that could be carried, and heavy rain frequently swept the structure away. Residents then had to rebuild the crossing before they could return to their fields.

The consequences went beyond inconvenience. When flooding destroyed the crossing, farmers could not reach their crops or move harvested produce. Interrupted access sometimes resulted in failed harvests and significant financial losses for households already dependent on agriculture.

The Inspiration Bridge, completed in 2023, replaced that uncertainty with a safer and more durable connection. A monitoring visit after two years of operation found that the benefits continued to be felt by Taji residents, particularly the village’s coffee farmers.

Farmers no longer face the same risk of losing a harvest simply because the route has been cut off. Motorcycles can cross the bridge, allowing residents to carry larger quantities of produce in less time. Faster and more reliable transport has improved the efficiency of farm work and contributed to higher household income.

The bridge has also strengthened the relationship between the village and its productive land. Daily travel is easier, crop distribution is more dependable, and families can plan their farming activities with greater confidence during the rainy season.

The initiative contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals on ending poverty, building resilient infrastructure, reducing inequality, and strengthening partnerships. It demonstrates how a focused infrastructure investment can protect livelihoods and create lasting economic value for a rural community.
