The thriving coffee industry across Indonesia offers promising economic opportunities for young people and productive communities. Equipping individuals with practical barista expertise not only answers the demand for skilled talent within the creative beverage sector but also paves the way for emerging independent entrepreneurs.

As part of its sustainable community economic empowerment initiatives, the Indonesian Inspiration Building Foundation (Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun / YIIM) organized the Barista and Latte Art Training Batch 2 from 3 to 5 July 2019. The three-day intensive workshop took place at Kopi Inspirasi, Grand Wijaya Center Complex, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

The program welcomed 25 participants representing diverse professions and backgrounds. In a strategic community collaboration, YIIM partnered with the Tasawuf Underground Community to involve 5 youths from the community, alongside jobseekers and aspiring entrepreneurs eager to establish their own coffee ventures.

Throughout the training, participants received comprehensive mentorship from seasoned barista trainers. The curriculum encompassed:

• Exploring Indonesian specialty coffee bean varieties and post-harvest processing methods.
• Hands-on operation of manual brewing apparatus and commercial espresso machines.
• Grind size calibration and espresso extraction fine-tuning.
• Milk steaming techniques and creative latte art pouring.
• Tool sanitation, workplace hygiene, and fundamental coffee shop operational management.

Each participant received direct, individualized practice sessions to master beverage preparation techniques with precision.

Through this vocational program, YIIM aims to empower participants to harness their newly acquired capabilities—whether securing employment as professional baristas or starting independent coffee businesses—thereby elevating household livelihoods and spreading the entrepreneurial spirit within their communities.

This initiative aligns directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
