AROMA Coffee Barista Training Creates New Entrepreneurs from Vulnerable Groups
YIIM together with PT Insight Investments Management (INSIGHT) held five days of intensive coffee barista training for vulnerable groups, covering espresso extraction techniques, milk foaming, latte art, mocktail compounding, and coffee shop operational management.

Jakarta, 23 June 2024-Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Developing (YIIM) together with Insight Investments Management carried out empowerment program activities for economically and socially vulnerable groups through the Community Barista Business Improvement Action (AROMA). This program is a form of effort made to provide opportunities for the community, especially economically and socially vulnerable groups, to explore their potential so that they can actively participate in the economic sector, especially in the coffee industry as a barista. In his speech, Chrisbiantoro as Chair of the Indonesian Inspiration for Building Foundation (YIIM) said that, “it is hoped that this training activity will be serious in carrying out the training because there will be an assessment for all participants. Apart from that, this training is not just a charity activity but this training contains a moral message for friends who will later become coffee shop practitioners or MSME baristas.”
In implementation, this program was attended by 15 participants who had successfully passed the selection process. Participants who are declared to have passed the selection will take part in a 5-day training program from 19-21 June 2024 and 24-25 June 2024 accompanied by experienced trainers and graduates of the previous AROMA program.
On the first day of activities, participants began by completing a pre-test to determine participants’ knowledge about baristas and coffee. After that, participants were given a basic introduction to barista and coffee. The aim of delivering this material is to measure and strengthen the participants’ basic knowledge in studying barista and coffee.
After a basic introduction to baristas and coffee, on the second day of training participants will be given material on Basic Techniques for Making Espresso and Espresso-Based Drinks.
On the second day, participants began to practice and practice making several coffee recipes such as Cappuccino, Latte and Americano as well as practicing making milk foam using manual and automatic techniques.
After learning how to make good milk foam, on the third day participants will learn latte art and milk pouring techniques. With this latte art training, it is hoped that participants will be able to make latte art and also show skills and creativity that can be expressed in latte art.
Apart from being given material about coffee, participants also received material about mocktails. This aims to increase knowledge of drinks in the non-coffee sector and increase customer interest. On the 4th day, the trainer introduced mocktails.
This introduction to mocktails was carried out by explaining the theory about mocktails, the differences with cocktails, and also the ingredients used.
Apart from mocktails, participants learned about various types of flavoring powders for drinks and the practice of using flavoring powders in coffee and non-coffee drinks.
Entering the final day, participants were provided with cafe management and customer service material. This is intended to provide participants with the ability to build attractiveness in the service sector so that customers get interesting experiences in visiting where participants work and managing coffee sales. And in the final activity, participants’ abilities were tested after participating in 5 days of training by holding a coffee shop roleplay.
With this roleplay, it is hoped that the knowledge gained during the 5 days of training can be implemented, show creativity and build participants’ self-confidence.
“Hopefully this training program can provide benefits to the wider community and also because we cannot deny that MSMEs are one of the wheels of the economy. So regarding MSMEs, actually the country’s economy may not be able to run as fast as this, so believe me that your contribution, although small, is very meaningful for the development of the country and especially the people around us.” Said CSR Insight Investments Representative, Isnaeni Setiawan.
By holding this coffee barista training, YIIM hopes to help the community, especially those belonging to vulnerable groups, to be empowered so they can actively participate in the economic sector, especially the barista and coffee industry. Apart from that, it helps participants to be able to
develop the knowledge and skills to start their business.
