On December 10, 2020, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), in collaboration with the renowned international organization from Gwangju, South Korea, The May 18 Memorial Foundation, held a joint event to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

The May 18 Memorial Foundation is an international organization established by the citizens of Gwangju, South Korea, to commemorate the legacy of the young men and women who were victims of military violence during the May 1980 Democratic Uprising. For this occasion, YIIM and The May 18 Memorial Foundation convened a webinar themed: "Supporting the Government in Realizing the Protection, Promotion, and Fulfillment of Human Rights in Indonesia."

YIIM firmly maintains that sustainable development goals can be fulfilled and economic growth achieved only when peace prevails and human rights are respected, protected, and advanced, as expressed in the spirit of Sustainable Development Goal 16.

YIIM also adheres to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ratified into Indonesian national legislation through Law No. 11 of 2005.

The webinar presented three distinguished keynote resource persons:

Representing the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Dr. Amich Alhumami, M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D. served as speaker in his capacity as Director of Education and Religion at Bappenas RI; alongside Chairperson of YIIM, Chrisbiantoro, S.H., LL.M.; Commissioner of the Aceh Truth and Reconciliation Commission (KKR Aceh), Muhamad Daud Beureuh, S.H.; and survivor and YIIM entrepreneurship alumna, Mrs. Wanma Yetty, with moderation by Novia Seni Astriani from YIIM. In his address, Amich Alhumami stated: "Bappenas plays a pivotal role in national development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although the SDGs are broad, poverty eradication, hunger prevention, and related priorities must remain primary targets. We warmly welcome collaborative initiatives with diverse national stakeholders."

Amich also highlighted local grassroots innovations, such as the Jungle School (Sekolah Rimba) and diverse community initiatives that merit support to realize the SDGs so that 'No One is Left Behind.'

Meanwhile, Daud Beureuh from KKR Aceh articulated his hope that Indonesia's development remains closely attuned to victims' rights and recovery: "KKR Aceh is a legitimate child of the Reform era, and we commissioners strive to the utmost so that the restorative recovery of victims' rights proceeds properly."

Daud also described the public hearing mechanisms, survivor testimony gathering, archival documentation, and policy recommendations generated by KKR Aceh for concrete follow-up by the government.

Wanma Yetty, speaking as a survivor and alumna of YIIM's entrepreneurship programs, shared deep gratitude for the benefits of YIIM's vocational training, which empowered her and fellow survivors to establish independent culinary ventures supporting household livelihoods. Wanma Yetty expressed hope that more institutions like YIIM emerge to uplift survivors and marginalized individuals toward economic independence.

The final speaker, YIIM Chairperson Chrisbiantoro, affirmed YIIM's unwavering commitment to collaborating with all segments of society in supporting development coupled with the protection and advancement of human rights: "YIIM seeks to embrace socially disadvantaged beneficiaries. Those from correctional backgrounds, protected witnesses and victims, underprivileged communities, and other vulnerable groups must be supported so that no one is left behind. Even with modest capacities, we endeavor to spread inspiration through community empowerment."

This webinar formed the culminating chapter in a series of collaborative events between YIIM and The May 18 Memorial Foundation. Earlier, on November 19, 2020, YIIM and the foundation hosted a webinar themed "Advancing the Implementation of SDG 16," followed on November 20, 2020, by a second session promoting literacy and book donations for the Sekolah Kita Reading Garden in Rumpin, Bogor.
