At 50, Panut Panuju is building a new chapter through a vehicle-washing business that combines practical skills, steady effort, and a strong sense of gratitude. His journey began with a 2023 training program organized by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun, or YIIM, and PT Insight Investments Management for clients of the Malang Class I Probation Office.

The program was designed to help participants improve their livelihoods through marketable skills and small-enterprise opportunities. It also supports the Sustainable Development Goals on ending poverty and reducing inequality by helping people who face barriers to employment create their own sources of income.

Before serving a ten-month sentence, Panut worked as a farmer and accepted various informal jobs to support his wife and two children. His earnings were unpredictable. After his release in 2021 and a five-month parole period, finding work remained difficult. The Malang Probation Office eventually offered him a position as caretaker of Griya Abhiparaya, where he now lives with his wife. His two children are married and living independently.

The caretaker role provided Panut with Rp1 million in income and a starting point for rebuilding his life. He remained grateful for the work but continued hoping for a more adequate and sustainable livelihood. When YIIM and Insight Investments Management invited him to join vehicle pressure-washing training, he saw an opportunity to gain experience and turn a practical skill into additional income.

After the training, YIIM and Insight Investments Management provided the Malang Probation Office with vehicle-washing equipment. Panut was then given the opportunity to operate a service in front of Griya Abhiparaya. The support allowed him to move directly from training into business ownership without having to purchase all the essential equipment himself.

Within two months, the service was washing one or two vehicles a day. Panut charges Rp10,000 for a motorcycle and Rp25,000 for a car, with operating hours from morning until late afternoon. To encourage repeat customers, he introduced a loyalty offer that provides one free wash after ten paid visits.

The first weeks brought challenges, including learning more efficient washing techniques and managing water use. Panut responded by practising consistently and making customer satisfaction his priority. He believes that improvement comes from staying committed to the work and learning from each vehicle he handles.

During the first month, the business generated Rp600,000 in gross income. Half of the earnings went to Panut and his wife for daily needs, while the other half was reserved for operating expenses and the future development of the enterprise.

Panut now sees room to grow because the service is located in a strategic area. He hopes to add snow-foam washing and tire-repair services, and eventually open another branch that his child could operate if customer demand continues to rise.

For Panut, the business represents far more than additional income. It is evidence that training, access to equipment, and trust from community institutions can help someone rebuild confidence and move toward economic independence. He remains thankful to YIIM and Insight Investments Management for giving him the knowledge and tools to create a livelihood with lasting potential.
