Safeguarding Public Health and Strengthening Community Solidarity Amid the Second Covid-19 Wave
Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), in partnership with BEM IKM Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia, hosted a public health educational webinar providing practical home self-isolation guidance and Covid-19 prevention measures for communities.

On July 30, 2021, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) organized a public webinar titled "Safeguarding Public Health Amidst the Second Wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic." Convened via Zoom, the forum welcomed 80 participants representing YIIM program beneficiaries, homemakers, university students, social advocates, and the general public.
The webinar was convened in response to the severe surge of Covid-19 cases during the second wave in Indonesia, which necessitated the government’s implementation of Emergency Public Activity Restrictions (PPKM Darurat). The discussion addressed the clinical dangers of emerging coronavirus variants, household health protection strategies, and civil society mutual aid mechanisms mobilized to alleviate socio-economic hardship.
This public health initiative aligns directly with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
The webinar featured four prominent resource speakers alongside a survivor testimonial:
The first speaker was Dr. Tigor Yehezkiel, Sp.Rad, a diagnostic radiologist.
The second speaker was Sonny S. Adnan, S.Sos., BKP, an active volunteer with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) South Jakarta.
The third speaker was Father Ignatius Sandyawan Sumardi, a social activist, cultural figure, and human rights advocate.
The fourth speaker was Muhammad Faruqi, a medical student representing the Liga Medika FK UI organizing committee.
The session concluded with a testimonial from Iyus Arifin, a 2018 YIIM barista entrepreneurship alumnus and Covid-19 survivor.
The event was formally opened with welcoming remarks from Chrisbiantoro, S.H., LL.M., Chairman of the Board of Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun.
In his opening address, Chrisbiantoro stated: "Since early 2020, YIIM has actively raised funds and distributed emergency relief for populations affected by Covid-19, delivering medical PPE to frontline healthcare workers, surgical masks, daily hot meals, internet subsidies for students and teachers, and thousands of staple food parcels across the archipelago. Presently, YIIM has also initiated virtual entrepreneurship classes to empower families to establish micro-enterprises. We hope today’s dialogue provides profound educational insights for the wider public."
Opening the panel presentations, Dr. Tigor Yehezkiel, Sp.Rad explained: "The coronavirus transmits rapidly through airborne droplets. Patients with underlying chronic comorbidities require heightened vigilance. The public must adhere consistently to safety protocols: wearing masks, frequent handwashing, social distancing, boosting immunity, and receiving vaccinations promptly."
The second speaker, Sonny S. Adnan, S.Sos., BKP observed: "What the public urgently needs today is genuine synergy between civil society and the government through relief packages delivered straight to grassroots families. Partnering with local MSMEs, such as procuring ready-to-eat meals for self-isolating patients, effectively stimulates the micro-economy during times of distress."
The third speaker, Father Ignatius Sandyawan Sumardi underlined: "The toll of Covid-19 on the urban poor has been exceptionally harsh. When infected, they are often cut off from medical treatment and overlooked by official social assistance rolls. Grassroots mutual solidarity—neighbors helping neighbors—has served as our true bulwark against delayed bureaucratic responses."
The fourth speaker, Muhammad Faruqi noted: "As medical students, we actively support pandemic mitigation through community health literacy, relief logistics management, scientific research, and civic advocacy. Through Liga Medika, we run fundraising initiatives to supply nutritional packages for medical personnel, PPE sets, and food essentials for vulnerable families."
The panel concluded with a personal reflection from Iyus Arifin: "When I first contracted Covid-19, I experienced no symptoms at all. However, after five days of self-isolation and subsequent treatment at the Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital, severe coughing and anosmia set in. I implore the public to remain disciplined in maintaining health protocols wherever they are, because this virus is undeniably real and dangerous."
During the event, YIIM officially presented a certificate of appreciation to Liga Medika BEM IKM FK UI for channeling charitable funds through YIIM, which were directly distributed as vital life-support parcels to 20 low-income households self-isolating in Penjaringan, North Jakarta.
The webinar engaged attendees interactively over two hours from 2:00 PM to 4:15 PM WIB. Through this forum, YIIM hopes the public acquired practical health knowledge while strengthening mutual empathy, reaffirming that safeguarding public health remains a collective civic responsibility across all sectors of society.
Salam Inspirasi!
