The Jakarta metropolitan area is facing an increasingly complex thermal ecological crisis as a direct consequence of rising land surface temperatures and the intensifying urban heat island phenomenon. In a dedicated effort to support its Education Pillar, the Indonesian Building Inspiration Foundation (YIIM) partnered with PT Insight Investments Management (PT IIM) and PT Inovasi Finansial Teknologi (Makmur), supported by implementing partner U-Inspire Indonesia, to launch the Jakarta Weather Detective (U-DETECT Jakarta) initiative at SMAN 48 Jakarta on June 17, 2026.

The program was attended by partner leadership, including Ria Meristika Warganda as Director of PT IIM, Stefanus Dennis Winarto as Chief Investment Officer of Makmur, Giovanni Chyntia Pradipta as Lead of U-Inspire Indonesia, and Diantini Rahayu representing the Executive Board of YIIM.

This educational initiative focuses on technological integration, actively engaging students in environmental monitoring through portable temperature sensors. Thirty high school students divided into 15 collaborative teams conducted direct observations of their local microclimate. The project advances STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) literacy and citizen science concepts, empowering students to move beyond textbook memorization and immerse themselves in empirical inquiry.

The Jakarta Weather Detective (U-DETECT Jakarta) initiative aligns with the Government of Indonesia’s Asta Cita vision, specifically in strengthening human capital development, science, technology, education, health, and gender equality.

Furthermore, the initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by introducing innovative, experiential learning methodologies that equip youth with actionable 21st-century environmental competencies.

Transforming educational paradigms from passive reading into experiential learning forms the cornerstone of inclusive and transformative schooling. By monitoring environmental metrics in real-time, ecological awareness is cultivated from an early age, motivating tangible grassroots actions against urban heat and climate vulnerability.

The program also exemplifies the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly within environmental stewardship and social empowerment, by building resilient, climate-literate younger generations.

Stefanus Dennis Winarto, Chief Investment Officer of Makmur, stated, “Much like investments that multiply through compound interest, small and consistent contributions generate profound long-term impacts over time. U-DETECT Jakarta stands as a prime example of how investor participation directly enriches and empowers society.”

Representing U-Inspire Indonesia, Giovanni Chyntia Pradipta expressed deep gratitude and presented certificates of appreciation to YIIM, PT Insight Investments Management, Makmur, and SMAN 48 East Jakarta, while officially handing over the U-Detect environmental monitoring sensors to the school for ongoing educational observations.

Through this collaborative program, YIIM and its partners aspire to continuously expand applied scientific literacy and inspire younger generations to take an active role in ecological preservation.
