From Training to Income: Samih’s Journey to Independence Through Sewing

Equipped with sewing training from YIIM and an aid sewing machine, Samih successfully transformed physical limitations and job loss into a thriving, self-reliant home sewing business in Depok.

Life threw an unexpected test at Samih (48) when severe back pain and spinal issues left him unable to continue working as an active construction laborer. Losing his primary livelihood was a daunting challenge, especially with a family depending on him.

Unwilling to surrender to physical constraints, Samih searched for alternative ways to earn an honorable living. His turning point came when he joined the Vocational Sewing Training Program organized by Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and PT Insight Investments Management.

During the intensive training, Samih learned sewing techniques from scratch—from taking body measurements and cutting fabric patterns to operating sewing machines and finishing garments. His determination and focus allowed him to master basic tailoring skills quickly.

Upon graduating, YIIM provided Samih with a complete sewing machine business assistance package. Starting from a modest corner in his home in Depok, West Java, Samih began offering clothing alterations and custom tailoring services for neighbors and local community members.

Today, Samih’s sewing service has earned a loyal customer base. His regular income allows him to support his family with pride and dignity, proving that physical limitations are no barrier to economic independence when met with skill and opportunity.

Samih’s story is a living testament to how targeted vocational empowerment and business equipment aid create sustainable livelihoods, restoring confidence and financial resilience.
