Bambang Setiaji (41 years old), or often called Bambang, is one of the alumni of the AC cleaning and service training organized by the Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun Foundation (YIIM) in collaboration with PT. Insight Investments Management (INSIGHT) in 2020. This program is a form of support from INSIGHT and YIIM for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Number 1 on Ending Poverty and SDG Number 2 on Zero Hunger.

This man from Jakarta lives with his wife and five children in a simple rented house in Depok. Before participating in the training, Bambang had worked as a construction worker for a year with an unpredictable income.

Starting from an Interest to Becoming a Source of Income

Bambang first became acquainted with the AC cleaning and service training when he was informed by a friend who saw an announcement in the form of a flyer about the AC cleaning and service training held by YIIM and INSIGHT on Instagram. Upon hearing this information, he became interested. Luckily, Bambang really likes technical and construction tools. Bambang immediately registered for the training and eventually had the opportunity to attend the free 3-day training held at YIIM’s office in the Gran Wijaya Ruko Complex, South Jakarta.

After attending the training, Bambang was selected as one of the participants who received business assistance in the form of AC cleaning and service equipment from YIIM and INSIGHT. The tools provided included standard AC tools, a ladder, steamer, hoses, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, and a manifold gauge. He felt happy to receive the assistance and felt it was very beneficial.

“Alhamdulillah, it’s beneficial, so we can earn a living from it. I’m happier like that. So, they gave us the bait and the fishing rod; we just have to find the fish.”

When Bambang received the tool assistance, he immediately opened an AC cleaning and service business for washing machines and refrigerators under the name “PANCA PUTRI AC”. He started this business independently. However, if Bambang needed help, he would seek assistance from fellow alumni of the AC cleaning and service training who lived nearby and were not busy handling AC cleaning and service jobs.

In running his AC technician service business, Bambang does marketing starting from word of mouth. He does this work from morning to afternoon. Sometimes, if there are unfinished issues, he works until night.

Bambang’s customers are mostly domiciled in Depok. However, thanks to word-of-mouth marketing, Bambang’s customer base has expanded to the Jakarta area. In a month, Bambang has about 20 to 25 customers. He sets varied service prices. For standard AC prices, for ½-1 PK AC units he charges Rp75,000, and for 1.5-2 PK units he charges Rp85,000. For service costs, the price is adjusted according to the damage.

Income Increases

The income received by Bambang in a month is Rp3,000,000. When customers are quiet, the income received is below Rp3,000,000. For friends who help, he splits the income equally with them. For example, if the income received in a day is Rp225,000, the friend gets Rp100,000 and Bambang gets Rp125,000.

Although Bambang is now an AC technician, he sometimes still works as a daily construction worker in his spare time. He only does this work when he has few customers. He joins a friend who works in the same construction profession.

Bambang feels grateful for participating in the AC cleaning and service training organized by YIIM and INSIGHT, as he gained knowledge about refrigeration that he had never learned before. By participating in this training, Bambang has obtained additional means to support his family’s daily needs. Bambang hopes that his business can be developed through social media marketing so that he can handle more and more customers in wider areas.
