On 20 November 2020, the Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun Foundation (YIIM) and its main partner PT. Insight Investments Management, again held a social assistance program in the form of reading book donations to boost the literacy spirit in Indonesia.

This event was also supported by the May 18 Memorial Foundation, an international humanitarian organization based in Gwangju, South Korea.

The donated books consisted of children’s reading materials including fairy tales, folklore, educational packages, religious books, and basic entrepreneurship books for children to foster an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age.

The book donations were handed over to Sekolah Kita Rumpin Bogor, located at Kampung Cibitung, Rumpin District, Bogor Regency, West Java Province.

Sekolah Kita Rumpin is an informal school established over the past 5 years to ignite and improve literacy among children and youth so that they increasingly love books to enrich their knowledge and information for a better generation for the nation. This program is also in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 4 on Education.

Reading activity is an important activity to make Indonesia’s human resources excellent and able to answer the challenges of the 2045 Demographic Bonus. However, in reality, the literacy rate of Indonesian citizens is still low. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in 2016, out of 61 countries, Indonesia’s literacy rate was still very low. The results of a study published under the name The World’s Most Literate Nations show that Indonesia ranks 60th, just one level above Botswana.

In relation to this, the Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun Foundation (YIIM) with main partner PT Insight Investments Management and international organization May 18 Foundation in South Korea held a series of reading book assistance activities and a Webinar together with Sekolah Kita Rumpin as the beneficiary.

The first series of events was the donation of reading books to the Sekolah Kita Rumpin reading park on Friday, 20 November 2020 at Kampung Cibitung, Rumpin District, Bogor Regency, starting at 10.30 WIB until finished. The donation was received symbolically by Mrs. Neneng as the initiator of Sekolah Kita Rumpin.

The second event, on the same day, was a webinar with the theme “Through Books, Let’s Improve the Culture of Literacy and Entrepreneurial Spirit from an Early Age”. The speakers included Achmad Fanani Rosyidi (YIIM Program Manager), Retno Listyarti (KPAI Commissioner), and Mrs. Neneng (Initiator of Sekolah Kita Rumpin). The event was moderated by Novia Seni Astriani from the YIIM team.

Before it was officially opened, the discussion event began with a speech from the Chair of the YIIM Board, Mr. Chrisbiantoro.

In the event, Chrisbiantoro explained that this activity is part of YIIM’s program which also focuses on educational programs in order to successfully carry out the mandate of SDG number 4 on quality education goals.

So far, YIIM has conducted programs related to education, including providing scholarships for outstanding students at several campuses, renovating elementary school libraries in several areas, and providing reading books for reading parks or libraries. “This event is YIIM’s educational program to strengthen literacy and information in order to succeed in the SDG number 4 program,” he explained.

One of the discussion speakers, Retno Listyarti, as Commissioner of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), revealed that in the current digital era, early childhood students face many challenges in learning. One of them is the low literacy level of children due to their addiction to using gadgets. “The digital era and technological sophistication can have a negative impact on early childhood; children’s addiction to gadgets could become a serious problem,” she stressed.

Mrs. Neneng as the recipient of the donation and also a speaker in the webinar also expressed her immense gratitude to YIIM, PT Insight, and May 18 Foundation South Korea, for caring about children’s education at Sekolah Kita Rumpin. “For us (Sekolah Kita Rumpin), this reading book donation is very useful in supporting our learning activities and motivating our students, thank you,” said Mrs. Neneng.

A representative from PT. Insight Investments Management, Dwi Anggita Laksmi, said, “hopefully this donation of reading books will increase the love for books and literacy in Indonesia, for a better future for the nation.”
