Hair Styling and Salon Vocational Training for Female Inmates at Class I Pondok Bambu Detention Center
YIIM and PT Insight Investments Management organized a five-day hairstyling and hairdressing workshop for inmates at Pondok Bambu Detention Center, practicing precision hair cutting, blow drying, and restorative creambath scalp treatments.

On Friday, 3 to 7 July 2023, YIIM and INSIGHT held hair styling and hairstyling training at the Pondok Bambu Detention Center in East Jakarta. This training was part of a series of training programs aimed at jointly realizing productive empowerment for detainees at the state detention center.
In the second introductory speech, Mr. Chrisbiantoro, as Chair of the Board of the Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun Foundation (YIIM), delivered remarks in which he stated that through the selection of hair styling and hairstyling training, it is hoped that the detainees participating in the training will gain entrepreneurial management knowledge about micro and small business financial bookkeeping, business planning, and digital marketing in the field of hair styling services. The detainees participating in the training can share the knowledge and skills acquired from the hair styling training with other detainees who have not yet participated. The detainees participating in the training are able to practice the results of the hair styling training through the business units available at the Class I Pondok Bambu Detention Center. The detainees participating in the training can establish independent micro and small businesses in the field of hair styling services after completing their sentences.
The hair styling training was attended by 10 trainees and featured Khutbi (Hairstylist and owner of DeLavina Salon) as the trainer, with Agus Jamaludin serving as the training assistant. The hair styling and hairstyling training was conducted over 5 days, starting each day at 09:00 and ending at 15:30 WIB. The material delivered in this training included: (1) an introduction to hair styling tools and equipment, (2) material on hair sectioning, (3) material on understanding cutting techniques, (4) material on blow dry techniques, and (5) material on creambath. During the training series, participants were provided with training modules compiled by the trainer team and the committee, and each participant was also given a hair styling toolkit used during direct practice sessions.
In the direct practice session, each participant was assigned tasks to practice how to use scissors and cutting techniques, lifting techniques, full oval hair model practice, parallel graduation cutting techniques with a diagonal plus cutting pattern line, hair cut finishing, layering practice, and finally creambath and blow dry practice. In this practice session, each participant used a hair mannequin. On the final day of the training, participants practiced on human models (real people) by inviting fellow detainees as customers with the desired hairstyle choices.
This program is also part of YIIM and INSIGHT’s commitment to supporting government programs to create productive detention centers and equip detainees with various skills. It is hoped that this program can inspire a broader range of stakeholders who care about economic and social empowerment in detention centers, thereby breaking the chain of potential crime in criminal acts.
YIIM is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people from various backgrounds, founded by social and humanitarian activists.
