Bandung, October 4, 2025 – In an effort to prevent thalassemia from an early stage, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM) and Insight Investments Management established a strategic collaboration with the Indonesian Thalassemia Foundation (Yayasan Thalassaemia Indonesia) and the Bandung Social Welfare Polytechnic (Politeknik Kesejahteraan Sosial Bandung). This partnership brought to life an Educational Seminar and Thalassemia Screening on October 4, 2025, in Bandung City.

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder passed down through parents carrying the genetic trait (carriers). Given that there is currently no medical cure for thalassemia, preventive measures—notably premarital screening—remain the most effective intervention to halt its transmission. Unfortunately, public literacy regarding this condition remains critically low across Indonesia. Ministry of Health records from 2023 indicated 11,000 registered thalassemia patients nationwide. At the provincial level, West Java recorded the highest prevalence with 4,255 cases, with Bandung City ranking highest among all municipalities and regencies.

Under the banner "Realizing a Zero Thalassemia Future," the program specifically engaged the youth of Bandung to heighten their awareness and health literacy. The initiative comprised a multifaceted approach including digital awareness campaigns, an expert-led seminar, and comprehensive blood screening sessions.

The initiative successfully drew 160 young participants, with 142 individuals undergoing full clinical thalassemia screening. Prior to the event, the majority of attendees had little to no knowledge concerning the disorder. Following the seminar, however, participants developed a well-rounded grasp of thalassemia, encompassing clinical nuances and practical preventive protocols. One participant remarked: "By joining this event, I finally understand what thalassemia is, along with how to manage and prevent it." Another participant highlighted: "I now understand thalassemia clearly; having this screening makes us Gen Z youths, who are approaching marital age, far more vigilant and proactive."

Through this humanitarian initiative, YIIM and its partners aspire to inspire youth to champion thalassemia literacy, effectively breaking the chain of transmission and safeguarding future generations.
