On November 8, 2019, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), in collaboration with Insight Investment Management, hosted an integrated entrepreneurship masterclass for alumni and participants of YIIM’s vocational programs. The cohort brought together 16 (sixteen) participants representing the Barista Coffee, Barbershop, and Baking & Culinary Arts training tracks.

This masterclass served as an advanced capacity-building session designed to equip emerging entrepreneurs and small business owners with essential managerial insights and practical business competencies, ensuring they can compete effectively and sustainably grow their food, grooming, and coffee enterprises.

The intensive workshop ran from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM WIB with an extensive curriculum. The opening session on entrepreneurial theory was delivered by Mrs. Dita, a lecturer from the Jakarta Polytechnic of Correctional Science (POLTEKIP Jakarta).

The second session was facilitated by the Tabungan Kesejahteraan Keluarga Credit Cooperative (Koperasi Kredit TAKERA), which addressed credit access, small business capital management, and strategic partnership avenues between independent entrepreneurs and cooperatives.

This was followed by an inspiring experiential sharing session by Abdul Basyir, a seasoned culinary entrepreneur. After his enterprise collapsed during the 1998 monetary crisis, Abdul Basyir engineered a remarkable comeback through sheer grit and resilience. He also mentored his children to build their own independent dry snack enterprises, who now employ their own staff. Today, Abdul Basyir generates a daily turnover of IDR 4,000,000 (four million rupiahs) from his snack production, distributing products across a robust network of 1,000 (one thousand) small neighborhood kiosks and 40 (forty) wholesale agent stores.

The final module focused on daily financial management, led by YIIM Treasurer Satoto Biratmoko. In his presentation, Satoto concentrated on maintaining daily bookkeeping journals and fundamental profit-and-loss accounting principles crucial for business viability. He also provided practical ledger templates to give participants concrete working references for their daily records.

During her lecture, Mrs. Dita stressed that entrepreneurs must cultivate an innovative mindset and face challenges fearlessly: “Entrepreneurs must continuously innovate, never yield to hardship, and dare to pursue business expansion in order to grow.”

Furthermore, Koperasi TAKERA offered a strategic partnership avenue to the participants through cooperative membership. Under this scheme, members can build savings while accessing productive credit facilities to overcome working capital bottlenecks as they scale their ventures.

Participants voiced deep appreciation for the workshop’s practical value. Mrs. Wanma Yetti, one of the attendees, remarked: “One of our biggest hurdles in running a business has been financial management. This masterclass has truly opened our eyes on how to separate business finances from household spending and accurately calculate gross versus net profit.”

Concluding the event, YIIM Chairman Chrisbiantoro shared his aspirations: “May this training instill lasting self-confidence in all participants to expand their businesses. We look forward to seeing resilient new entrepreneurs emerge from grassroots communities, ultimately sparking an even wider movement of inspiration.”
