Mufti Ahbal (31), commonly known as Mufti, is a 2022 graduate of the social entrepreneurship barista training program organized by the Indonesia Inspiring Building Foundation (YIIM) together with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). He is a family member of the 2002 Bali bombing tragedy, in which his parents became victims.

Currently, Mufti lives with his wife and a 7-year-old child. To make ends meet, Mufti and his wife sell fruit at a kiosk near their home, and he is currently conducting market research to open a coffee shop. Since his youth, Mufti has been interested in the world of coffee and dreamed of opening his own coffee shop. One day, he learned that YIIM, together with LPSK and UNODC, was holding a social entrepreneurship barista training program and immediately registered. The barista entrepreneurship training, dedicated to victims and families of victims of terrorism crimes, became a gateway for Mufti to enter the new world of coffee business. He also wants to make his late parents proud, who passed away due to the Bali bombing.

The social entrepreneurship barista training program consisted of several stages: first online via Zoom Meeting for 3 days, followed by offline training in Jakarta for 5 days. Mufti learned a great deal about making coffee and managing a café. He was also given the opportunity to practice as a barista at Kafe Inspirasi for 2 weeks. After completing the training, Mufti received assistance from YIIM and LPSK in the form of coffee beans, glass syrup, grinders, manual brew tools, and an espresso machine.

The Ups and Downs of Life Did Not Make Him Give Up

Before participating in the barista training, Mufti’s family’s economy was unstable. Mufti had worked for several companies and started businesses, but they ended in failure—due to either eviction or a lack of understanding of business management, resulting in unbalanced income and expenses. Those failures did not stop Mufti from giving up. On the contrary, they made him want to keep learning and correcting his mistakes. Therefore, he continued to pursue the coffee field and took barista training from YIIM so that he could succeed when opening his business again.

Hard Work That Paid Off

After participating in the entrepreneurship training from YIIM and LPSK, Mufti admitted that he gained a lot of knowledge and skills related to coffee and entrepreneurship. With the knowledge, skills, and equipment assistance he received, Mufti finally realized his long-held dream of opening his own coffee shop named “Kedai Kopi Mr. M.” The shop has not yet officially opened as it is still in the menu finalization and kiosk renovation stage. However, Mufti has already received orders from relatives and neighbors while conducting market research to gauge price and taste compatibility with customer preferences.

Mufti sells various products, such as Hot & Ice Coffee, Espresso, Americano, Squash, Thai Tea, and many more. In addition, he created a product innovation by selling a new menu called “Arabica Ice Coffee Milk,” a blend of arabica, milk, and orange. This menu is one of the best sellers at his shop. Mufti buys the coffee beans from the market, grinds them himself, and then processes them into coffee products.

The coffee shop’s location is a kiosk on a main road near his home. It is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Drink prices at Kedai Kopi Mr. M vary, ranging from Rp10,000 to Rp50,000 depending on the coffee quality used. Mufti also sells ground coffee for Rp10,000 per 15 grams. Each day, Mufti can sell about 15 cups, with a daily revenue of approximately Rp150,000. Currently, Mufti’s coffee products can only be purchased directly at Kedai Kopi Mr. M, but in the future he plans to expand his market by registering his shop with Go-food, Grab Food, and similar platforms.

Providing Benefits to Others

“So that the knowledge I gained from YIIM can be useful for others, I am always welcoming to help them. Additionally, I also want to realize YIIM’s vision to always empower the surrounding community.”

He also wants to develop his business further; his dream is to offer 100 different menu items so his products are diverse and can expand the market. Mufti hopes that he can help those around him who are interested in learning how to make coffee and start a business.
