On September 2, 3, and 4, 2020, Yayasan Inspirasi Indonesia Membangun (YIIM), in collaboration with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (Lembaga Perlindungan Saksi dan Korban / LPSK), held an economic empowerment program delivering coffee barista training for protected witnesses and victims. The training was hosted at the LPSK Headquarters on Jalan Raya Bogor KM 24 No. 47-49, RT 06/RW 01, Susukan, Ciracas Sub-district, East Jakarta, DKI Jakarta.

This initiative constitutes an integral component of the psychosocial rehabilitation services provided to victims of crime under LPSK’s protection, as mandated by Law Number 31 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 13 of 2006 on the Protection of Witnesses and Victims.

The program represents a pioneering joint endeavor initiated by YIIM and LPSK to optimize psychosocial recovery, fulfilling Article 6 paragraph (1) letter b of Law Number 31 of 2014 which defines restorative rights for victims.

As stipulated by the statutory provision: “Victims of gross human rights violations, victims of terrorism offenses, victims of human trafficking offenses, victims of torture offenses, victims of sexual violence offenses, and victims of severe persecution, in addition to the rights referred to in Article 5, are also entitled to receive: psychosocial and psychological rehabilitation assistance.” Given that this training was conducted amid the COVID-19 pandemic, YIIM, the training instructors, and participants strictly enforced health protocols. All participants, trainers, and LPSK committee members underwent rapid antibody testing prior to the sessions to verify everyone was free from viral infection.

Participant numbers were strictly capped at 9 individuals to ensure physical distancing. Throughout the sessions, participants and instructors wore masks, gloves, and face shields, washing their hands routinely every 30 minutes.

The participating beneficiaries included survivors of terrorism, victims of severe physical assault, and survivors of human trafficking (TPPO).

Over three intensive days, trainees were taught coffee theory, sensory appreciation of Indonesian coffee varieties, the operation of professional barista gear, and diverse brewing and beverage crafting techniques. The training team also shared vital entrepreneurial knowledge, covering business startup preparation, required capital budgeting, profit-and-loss calculation, and cost-effective ingredient sourcing for MSME coffee shops. YIIM warmly invited participants to continue their practical training at Kopi Inspirasi Coffee Shop at the YIIM Office, Grand Wijaya Centre Complex, Jalan Wijaya II Block F/62B, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

Chairman of LPSK, Hasto Atmojo Suroyo, stated in his opening remarks, “For LPSK, this initiative marks a historic milestone in the delivery of psychosocial support for protected victims. It is the very first time that psychosocial rehabilitation has been integrated directly with vocational skills empowerment. We hope such meaningful endeavors will continue to flourish.”

As a ministerial-level state agency, LPSK provides comprehensive protection and assistance to protected persons. In 2019, LPSK served 3,365 protected witnesses and victims. Gross human rights violation cases accounted for the largest share at 1,611 individuals, followed by sexual violence cases at 507, terrorism cases at 415, other crimes at 370, human trafficking (TPPO) cases at 318, corruption cases at 115, torture cases at 26, and narcotics offenses at 3 protected persons.

Chairman of the YIIM Board, Chrisbiantoro, affirmed in his welcoming address, “YIIM is deeply grateful to partner with LPSK. This collaboration embodies YIIM’s civic commitment to advance national progress, specifically in economic empowerment and the restoration of dignity for crime victims. We hope this partnership will be sustained and broadened.”

Following this three-day barista training, YIIM hopes that participants can apply their newly acquired vocational skills to launch independent enterprises, laying solid foundations for building renewed, dignified lives within society.
